Our History
The first properly constituted meeting of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) took place on 30 November 1973, attended by representatives of six organisations – the Federation’s Constituent Associations.
The meeting agenda included a diverse range of items, such as reports of meetings with the UK Government on the concern over the availability of fuel supplies; oil and gas operators regarding their exploration activities in the North Sea and a Working Party on education courses for the fishing industry; the response to Government consultation on technical measures; metrification; consideration of positions for the upcoming Law of the Sea conference in 1974; European Economic Community (EEC) fleet structure policy; and a number of administrative matters — including discussion on appointing a full-time executive.
From 1973 to today, the Scottish Fishermen's Federation has achieved significant milestones.
The SFF was established to preserve and protect the interests of the fishermen within the membership of its Constituent Associations.
Founded to provide flexible and cost-effective marine services to the offshore oil and gas industries, securing alternative work for the fleet during periods of lower fishing opportunities. This has proved to be a successful diversification and, over the years, SFF Services Limited has added clients from other marine sectors — including seismic survey, subsea cables, and offshore renewables.
A registered charity with core objectives that include: education on the UK marine environment; education of those involved in UK fishing; health and the saving of lives; protection, preservation and stewardship of the marine environment; promotion of the conservation of the marine living organisms and preservation of marine ecology and biodiversity; and the provision of welfare services and facilities for fishermen and fishing communities.
A new subsidiary company, incorporated to deliver certain existing services and develop new offerings — including environmental services for the offshore energy and marine industries.
The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation is dedicated to preserving and promoting the collective interests of Scotland’s fishermen’s associations whilst at the same time ensuring a sustainable future for our fisheries. Find out more about our 50th anniversary celebrations in our yearbook.
