The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation has given a cautious welcome to new measures to prevent discards that were agreed by EU fishing ministers in Brussels early this morning.

EU ministers agreed a plan that will start in 2014 and phase out discards by 2019. The SFF says fishing ministers at the talks recognised many of the problems facing fishermen in implementing a discards ban in complex mixed fisheries and have taken the first steps in ensuring that the scheme is introduced in a practical and sensible manner.

With the pelagic (mackerel and herring) fishery being the first sector of the fishing fleet to be affected by the new discards ban, Scottish pelagic fishermen say it is essential that its implementation is managed across a level playing field.

Ian Gatt, chief executive of the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association said: “The discards ban will begin for the Scottish pelagic fleet in 2014. This is a challenging timescale, but the pelagic industry is gearing itself up to manage its fishing operations in accordance with the new regulations.

The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) has welcomed the announcement by the UK Government that a new agreement with the oil industry has been reached to provide emergency towing capability in response to incidents in waters around Scotland.

An operational and commercial model has been agreed allowing HM Coastguard to call on the BP-chartered vessel, Grampian Frontier, to provide support in the event of a pollution incident.

An inaccurate and negative portrayal of scallop fishing that will be aired as part of the ‘Hugh’s Fish Fight’ Channel 4 TV series has come under stinging criticism from the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation.

The SFF fears the three-programme series, which begins tonight, will offer a totally imbalanced and distorted view of the scallop fishing sector, which supports many jobs and provides consumers with a much valued and sustainable food resource

The Scottish fishing industry is developing new and innovative designs of prawn trawls that significantly reduce discards of whitefish such as cod. The designs represent a new approach to fisheries management where fishermen fed up with unworkable European regulations have taken matters into their own hands to deliver effective conservation.

Project partners will meet in Aberdeen on 29 May in Aberdeen to discuss the next round of the Personal Flotation Device (PFD) initiative. This will be the first time all the project partners have been able to get around the table together and the main topic for discussion will be the resources they can offer to ensure nationwide distribution of the PFDs. The partners are the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, Ocean Safety, RNMDSF, RNLI, Maritime & Coastguard Agency and Marine Scotland.
