The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation (SFF) will explain to a top-level meeting on fishing safety in London tomorrow (30 April) the various safety initiatives already underway in the industry and seek support from all participants in the seafood industry in ensuring that the hazardous business of catching fish becomes less so.

The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation attended a ‘useful’ meeting in Brussels this week of the European Bureau for Conservation and Development that included a showing of the Seafish film The Business of Fishing.

Among those attending the event, chaired by Struan Stevenson MEP, was SFF President Alan Coghill and fishing skippers Jimmy Buchan (Amity), Iain Harcus (Aalskere) and Sandy McLennan (Boy John). Also present were a number of MEPs, environmental NGOs, and a cross-sector of fishing industry interests.

With Scottish seafood suppliers enjoying a huge amount of interest from international customers at this week’s European Seafood Exposition in Brussels, the sustainability credentials of Scottish-caught fish has been further buoyed by recent data from the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), which reveals a significant fall in fishing pressure on stocks in the north-east Atlantic.

Today (22 April) sees the commencement of a series of Regional Workshops in advance of the Public Consultation on the proposals for a Network of Marine Protected Areas in Scotland.

Following earlier representation and discussion with Marine Scotland it was agreed that there was a need for an opportunity to support discussion with stakeholders about potential relevant management measures that may be considered for each of the proposed MPAs within Scotland's territorial waters.

Commenting on the release today (19 April) of provisional statistics by Scotland’s Chief Statistician which reveals that the overall quayside value of fish landed by the Scottish fleet in 2012 decreased by seven per cent, Bertie Armstrong, chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, said:

Bertie Armstrong, chief executive of the Scottish Fishermen’s Federation is in Bilbao, Spain, today for a meeting of the North Western Waters Regional Advisory Council (NWWRAC).

This is being seen as a crucial meeting of the NWWRAC, given that the future of fisheries management will be the main topic for discussion, including the formation of area and multi-species management plans.

Derek Cardno, SFF Marine Safety & Training Officer, is in Riga in Latvia this week for the Fishing Industry Safety and Health (FISH Platform) conference.

FISH Platform provides for the needs of the fishing industry on a joint approach to improve the safety and health of fishermen and reducing accidents in the industry as well as the harmonisation of EU fishing training and certification.There will be 10 northern European fishing industries represented at this week’s conference.

Commenting on the news that the Marine Conservation Society has moved to upgrade its ‘Fish to Eat’ rating for Scottish caught mackerel so as to differentiate it from mackerel caught by Iceland and the Faroes,   Ian Gatt, chief executive of the Scottish Pelagic Fishermen’s Association, said:

“We are pleased that the Marine Conservation Society has made this important differentiation between Scottish caught mackerel compared with that from Iceland and the Faroes. This new assessment will enable consumers to make informed choices when purchasing mackerel.
